The Tsunami Project in Indonesia
Introduction
Wings of Support is currently working together with Aircares and Pilots without Borders in setting up a unique project. The unique character of the project is twofold:
- For the first time several independent non-profit organizations within KLM (Wings of Support, Aircares and Pilots without Borders) work closely together to realize a great project. This is also done in cooperation with the Liliane Fund and Sharing Success, an entrepreneurial participation fund within the Liliane Fund.
- In Medan, a rehabilitation center for handicapped children will be built where also the education of the fieldworkers who work with these children in the tsunami areas, will take place. This approach within this center is also special in Indonesia.
In the aftermath of this great sea quake west of Sumatra on Boxing day 2004 many handicapped children seemed to have become the victim of the tsunami. Not only the direct consequences of the tsunami are hard on these children; the social unacceptance of these children, as full persons is a much greater handicap.
Together with
Aircares
, Pilots without Borders,
the Liliane Fund
AND Sharing Success an opportunity will be created to – if medically necessary – take these children from the affected areas and let them revalidate and rehabilitate in the center. When sufficiently recovered, they can return to their own environment. For the children who became orphans, a permanent place within the center or orphanage will be created.

Description
Vrij snel na de Tsunami op 26 December 2004 kwamen bij WoS vragen binnen of wij geld gingen storten op Giro 555.
Dit soort hulp valt echter niet binnen onze visie van hulp verlenen. Daarom wilden we wat anders, en zijn blij dat we uiteindelijk toch hulp kunnen verlenen in samenwerking met onder andere PZG en Aircares. Samen met deze organisatie binnen de KLM gaat WoS -ook in samenwerking- met Sharing Success en het Liliane Fonds een opvang- en revalidatie centrum bouwen in Medan op Noord Sumatra. Daar zal opvang en revalidatie worden geboden aan gehandicapte kinderen uit voornamelijk de tsunami gebieden. Na de revalidatie gaan de kinderen terug naar hun eigen leefomgeving.
Verder wordt er ook een busje aangeschaft dat dienst gaat doen als mobiele medisch unit. Hiermee zal in en rond Banda Aceh rondgereden worden langs de verschillende bekende gehandicapte kinderen en ook worden gespeurd naar nog niet bekende kinderen. Met deze unit zal direkt benodigde medische hulp kunnen worden gegeven.
Ook zal een deel van de lopende kosten voor het deel project in Banda Aceh worden betaald.

How to get there
Dit project is praktisch gezien door crew niet meer te bezoeken vanaf een slipstation. Vanaf KUL en SIN kan het in een meerdaagse stop, maar je hebt een visum nodig en zult tickets moeten kopen. Het visum kan worden geregeld bij aankomst op het vliegveld van Medan. Voor verdere info kun je contact opnemen met Ron van Wagtendonk.
